Springtime adventures

What a gorgeous time of year it is! Spring is the season of new beginnings, when days become longer, the weather warmer, buds unfold, animals awaken and all around us is a celebration of life and the promise of a fresh start.

Spring is for waking up to a delicious breakfast in bed on a bright morning.
It’s for getting out and into nature.
It’s for gentle hikes alongside meandering countryside streams with the scent of blossoms in the air.
It’s for comfy shoes and sun hats, warm breezes and cool drinks.
It’s for suntanning by the ocean, cocktails by the pool or sundowners by the mountains.
It’s for luxurious spa days and lazy afternoon strolls.
It’s for romantic beach walks, cool dips in the deep blue sea and fish braais under the stars.

Following are some of the best ways to celebrate the gorgeous change of season and experience our remarkable country in all its ‘blooming’ glory.

It’s Springtime! Emerge, escape and exhale … at our amazing resorts!

Watch the Whales

Every year, between May and December, thousands of humpback whales pass along the East Coast on their 5,000-kilometer journey from the colder Southern Ocean up towards Mozambique, to mate or calf. They’re joined by 1000s of Southern right whales, sperm whales, minke and Bryde’s also moving along our coastline. Gentle, graceful and highly intelligent, these 30-ton beauties are a sight to behold as they break the surface to blow, slap their tail or pectoral fins, lunge or even launch most of their body length right out of the water (known as breaching). And being out on a boat on the open ocean on a gorgeous spring day to witness this annual spectacle is a marvellous adventure!

While Cape Town boasts some of the most prolific whale-watching opportunities in the world, the KZN North Coast also offers marvellous opportunities to see these gentle giants.

From the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site spanning 280 kilometers of coastline from the Mozambican border to the Lake St. Lucia estuary, all the way down to The Bluff, Durban, the waters teem with whales and other incredible wildlife at this time of year.

You can admire the whales from the beaches, from oceanside restaurants and cafes or, for the ultimate close encounter, choose from the many local service providers and head out on a boat-based trip for a memorable experience that you’ll cherish forever.
