The picturesque Selborne Golf Estate is ready to host the seventh edition of the Halfway-Scottfin Selborne Classic.
Golfers can look forward to another spectacular tournament as the annual Selborne Classic, co-sponsored by Halfway Toyota Scottburgh, takes place from Friday 5 to Sunday 7 August at Selborne Golf Estate in Pennington on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast.
“This is a fantastic tournament where old and new friends have the opportunity to get together in a relaxed environment for three days of magnificent golf,” said Jonathan Malkin, central manager of Selborne. “This is Selborne’s biggest golfing event, attracting players from around the country to our stunning venue. The course is currently in immaculate condition and weather conditions in August are always favourable with sunny days and no wind. In addition to top quality golf, we at Selborne are committed to ensuring every participant enjoys a memorable weekend on and off the course from the moment of their arrival to their departure.”
Adding weight to Malkin’s comments is the recent release of the list of the Top 100 South African golf courses for 2016 by British-based website, Top 100 Golf Courses. Selborne placed 64th on the list nationally – eighth in KwaZulu-Natal – which is a great achievement for the course.
“We are really proud to have featured on this illustrious list,” said Malkin, “It shows that the continued improvements are being noticed on an international level.”
Halfway Toyota Scottburgh’s dealer principal, Hubert Bergh, said they were proud to be affiliated with this prestigious event.
“We have an excellent relationship with Selborne and are sure that, under the current management, the Selborne Classic will be another tremendous success,” said Bergh. “This tournament is important to the local community, it showcases the beautiful sea views, wildlife and the high quality of golfing that Selborne is known for. Halfway Toyota supports the mobility of our community, both in sport as well as in life.”
All competitions played during the three-day Selborne Classic will be in teams of four with Friday and Saturday following a betterball format and Sunday a fourball alliance. On arrival at Selborne, players must register individually after which a ‘goodie’ bag can be collected. The three days of golf, as well as all halfway house meals, dinners and entertainment for the three nights, are included in the entrance fee.
On Friday 5 August, each team of four will be divided into two teams and assigned another team to compete against. First, second and third prizes will be awarded for the day, relative to the betterball pairings.
On Saturday 6 August, the betterball competition will follow Friday’s format although golfers must change partners within each two ball. The partner change is in keeping with the spirit of the tournament which encourages camaraderie while introducing golfers to different players. Once again, first, second and third prizes will be awarded.
On Sunday 7 August, each team will play a fourball alliance, two scores to count, format and the top five alliance prizes will be awarded on the day. This will be followed by the Selborne Classic overall prizegiving which will see the top 10 teams awarded some fantastic prizes. There will also be raffles held throughout the tournament, nearest-to-pins on all four shorts, mystery prizes daily as well as fun activities on each tee provided by sponsors.
This year, competitors will also be given the unique opportunity to participate in Selborne’s newly introduced Par 3 Challenge Tournament which will take place directly after the Selborne Classic on Monday 8 August.
