Here are our top five ‘lesser known gems’ to discover:

  1. Umzumbe Beach

Found just 13 kilometres from Margate, Umzumbe beach is still relatively undiscovered and tranquil. It’s a fantastic beach for families, with lifeguards on duty throughout the year, safe sea swimming conditions and a tidal pool. During peak holiday season, environmental education activities are held for kids and holidaymakers.

  1. Clearwater Mountain Biking Trail

Found just under 50 kilometres from Margate,  this family friendly mountain biking route provides avid bikers with an amazing experience. The trail is well-marked and exciting, winding through beautiful farmlands and mixed terrain. Bikes and gear are available for hire if required.

  1. Uvongo River Nature Reserve

Just 15 kilometres from Margate, the stunningly lush, tropical Uvongo River Nature Reserve offers a beautiful outdoor experience for families and couples. The Nature Reserve is connected to the lovely river by easy terrain footpaths, there is a great children’s paddling pool and shaded grassy spots right by the river – ideal for summer, spring or even winter picnics.

  1. The Red Desert

The Red Desert is found in Port Edward, roughly 45 kilometres from Margate and is a National Heritage Site, also occupying a space in the Guinness Book of World Records as the smallest desert in the world. Take a walk back in time 250 million years ago, when dinosaurs roamed the lower South Coast.

  1. Beaver Creek Coffee Estate

Also located in Port Edward, this coffee estate offers ‘Crop to Cup’ tours where you are able to learn the intricate process of producing the perfect ‘cuppa’. Along with sampling fine coffees and experiencing the distinguishing flavours of the world’s best coffee regions, Beaver Creek also offers freshly roasted speciality coffees, light lunches and delicious cakes at The Estate Café. Tour bookings are essential and there is a small fee.
