Doornkop Fish and Wildlife Reserve, A Truly Serene Getaway

Mpumalanga, translated as ‘where the sun rises’ in Swazi, is a place of astounding beauty and environmental importance, and wonders of the natural world are located in nearly every corner of this province.

Doornkop offers thatched self-catering accommodation of various sizes, ranging from three to five bedroomed units – available for short weekend breaks, mid-week getaways, or a full week adventure.  You will find a private braai area and build-in fireplace accompanying each cosy unit.

Doornkop also offers two outdoor swimming pools – one cold-water pool, and a heated spa pool set within the lovely thatched clubhouse area.  A games room, tennis court and a tuck shop, open during the week, are also available, with tennis racquets and fly-fishing equipment available to hire from the resort at reasonable prices.

Discover the area surrounding the resort on horseback, with guided horse rides to suite all capabilities, please book the day before if you would like to secure a morning ride.

Local Mpumalanga wildlife is abundant in this region, including species such as the Chacma Baboon, South African Hedgehog, Caracal, Kudu, Eland, Slender Mongoose and more.

You are able to traverse the area in your own vehicle on designated roads, although a vehicle with 4×4 capabilities ensures a smoother ride.

If you are keen to explore the natural wonders that Mpumalanga has to offer, all major attractions are located relatively close to Doornkop resort, but it is recommended that a ‘day trip’ be made out any of these excursions.Visit Barberton to view some of the oldest known rock formations in all of the world, recorded at 3.5 billion years old, or take a drive out to Graskop and marvel at the view out of ‘God’s Window’ located within the world’s third largest canyon, the Blyde River Canyon.  

The Sudwala Caves and their intricate formations, recorded as being over 240 million years old, will surely fascinate both you and the kids. Visit the Jane Goodall Chimpanzee Sanctuary, located within the Umhloti Nature Reserve, just outside of Nelspruit, or take a drive to the Kruger National Park for one of the most exhilarating game drive experiences you can get!
